Don’t tell anyone

Don’t tell anyone, but for a long time (years) I postponed launching my blog simply for doubting myself and believing it still was not the right moment. The array of reasons was creative, perfectly plausible and could go on indefinitely:

  • I’m not ready
  • I shouldn’t be doing this
  • I’ve never done it before
  • I’m not good enough
  • I don’t master the subject I want to write about
  • I don’t have enough time
  • I don’t have a fast computer
  • I should have 10 texts ready to be posted and 10 more on the way
  • It’s too hard
  • I don’t have a wide portfolio

I wanted to make sure everything was perfect before starting, which I came to realize it’s a big illusion and a way of self-sabotage. There would never be a right moment to start. If I kept believing in these excuses, the blog would be still a distant dream, a project forever in the planning phase.

Analyzing it more deeply I understood there were other underlying reasons to postpone my plans: fears. Fear of getting out of the comfort zone, fear of acknowledging my dreams and professional photography projects, so different from a faraway corporate life I once had. In short, fear of failure and face criticism and judgment.

Only when I realized I was focusing on what I didn’t have (“lack”), instead on all skills and resources I already had (“abundance”), I was able to shift my mindset and concentrate on what really mattered: create my website and get my blog online first and then pay attention to other professional projects.

In less than two months after the big decision, website and blog are a reality! I already had texts, the domain, and ideas. I only lacked courage.

And you know what? After taking the first step things get easier and you understand obstacles are much greater in your head. You can’t wait for the ideal moment to come and to feel fully prepared before jumping into something new. Don’t waste time like I did, don’t let perfectionism turn into procrastination!

Coincidently, while I was writing this text, I came across this quote on Instagram that totally resonated with me:

“Whatever you think you can’t do, just know that there is someone who is confidently doing it wrong right now. They have no plans at doing it better either and people are paying them to do it. Please believe in your own excellence as much as they believe in their mediocrity.”
